What Is SEO – Search Engine Optimization?

Updated: Dec 14, 2022

SEO is the practice of optimizing a website so as to increase its rank in the search engine results pages (SERP) for certain queries. The higher the website's position in the SERP, the more likely it is to be clicked on by potential customers. SEO is a complex and ever-evolving process, but there are some basics that every website owner can and should do to improve their site's visibility and ranking. These include optimizing title tags, meta descriptions, and header tags; creating quality content; and building backlinks from high-authority websites.

How does SEO work?

Search engines use what are called 'bots' to automatically collect data about web pages which is then stored in something called an 'index'. The index is a lot like a library where a librarian can help you find a book (or a web page) that you're looking for.

After the index has been created, algorithms are used to analyze the pages in the index and take into account hundreds of different ranking factors to determine what order the pages should appear in for any given search query.

The search algorithms are designed to bring up relevant, authoritative pages and give users a smooth search experience. By optimizing your site and content with these factors in mind, you can help your pages rank higher in the search results.
